Kerry Newman is a Director of Care Wyvern working alongside Ru, her husband in this family company.
Kerry’s managerial responsibilities are on the operational side of the business, but her main responsibility is for the training of all staff, especially the care workers. Kerry is lucky in that Tina, the Care and Operations Manager, is very experienced in this area and they work well together to make many different elements of training in the company more effectively. Kerry had a lot of training experience from previously working in advertising and though she started out ‘helping with the books’ she has since become much more involved in the whole business.
Kerry’s increased involvement in Care Wyvern started with carrying out care calls and still goes out on visits to clients from time to time. She has completed a PETTL, a training qualification for teaching adults, and worked to get qualified in almost all of the aspects needed for training the care workers. This includes the mandatory training like First Aid, Moving and Positioning of People and Safeguarding of Adults, as well as all the other elements that make up the Care Certificate training. She also is involved in shaping training policies for home care providers across the county being involved with other trainers and health professionals in reviewing training on an on-going basis.
Kerry is a Dementia Friends Champion running sessions within the company and outside of it to friends. Kerry has started to work with the local Dementia Action Alliance group in the area to offer dementia friends sessions to other companies. Her personal experience in this area, as well as professional experience, makes this aspect of care work of particular interest.
She is a keen sportswoman, generally liking to keep fit. She enjoys playing Volleyball and has been involved for nearly 10 years with coaching young players at Taunton Volleyball Club. She enjoys swimming, riding, reading, jazz and world music, and walking her dog on the Quantocks.
Clare spoke to one of our longest service carers, Jayne today . Jayne has been a carer 20 years and we thought it would be great to hear what she thought about her time at Care Wyvern (and beyond) Clare:...
